1. Booking Your Ceremony Location
To host a wedding ceremony at the Maroon Bells, you’ll need to reserve the designated ceremony site through Recreation.gov.
Site Name:Amphitheater at Maroon Bells
Capacity: Up to 50 people.
Booking Window: Reservations generally open one year in advance on a rolling basis, and dates book up fast—especially during peak autumn colors!
Cost: Around $200 for the venue reservation fee.
Note: Standing ceremonies without reservation are generally restricted near the main shore to protect the fragile alpine environment, so reserving the Amphitheater ensures a seamless, stress-free experience.
2. Vehicle Permits & Shuttle Access
Because the Maroon Bells Scenic Area is heavily visited, traffic access is regulated from late May through October:
Shuttle Buses: During peak hours (typically 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM), visitors access the Bells via the RFTA shuttle bus from Aspen Highlands.
Parking Passes: If you are holding a ceremony at the Amphitheater or planning an early-morning/sunset elopement, parking passes can be reserved in advance via Recreation.gov.
Commercial Vehicle Access: Your vendor team (photographer, officiant) will also need proper vehicle access permits for morning or evening sessions.
3. Best Time of Year for Maroon Bells Weddings
Summer (July – August): Lush green hills, vibrant wildflowers, and warm mountain weather. Be prepared for afternoon pop-up showers!
Fall (Mid-September – Early October): The most popular season by far. The golden aspen leaves reflection on Maroon Lake is magical, though crowds and reservation demand are highest during this window.
Sunrise vs. Sunset:Sunrise is strongly recommended for intimate elopements and photos. You get calm, mirror-like reflections on the lake, soft alpenglow on the peaks, and far fewer crowds!
4. Colorado Marriage License & Self-Solemnization
One of the best parts about getting married in Colorado is self-solemnization.
You do not need an officiant or witnesses to legally marry in Colorado!
You and your partner can sign your own marriage license right at Maroon Lake (and your dog can even sign with a paw print!).
You can pick up your marriage license at any County Clerk’s office in Colorado (Pitkin County or Garfield County are great local options).

6.Staying Within the Designated Areas
To help protect and preserve the beautiful surrounding environment, we ask that all wedding photos and guest activities remain within the designated rock wall boundary.

Revegetation & Conservation: The area beyond the rock wall is currently undergoing revegetation. Delicate young plants, soil, and native flora need time to establish root systems without foot traffic.
Preserving the Landscape: Stepping onto off-limits areas can cause soil erosion and damage fragile vegetation, preventing the natural landscape from recovering.
Keeping the Venue Beautiful: Respecting these boundaries ensures the natural scenery stays vibrant and healthy for future celebrations.
